A popular 30km training road ride for locals, this is an undulating route on some of the quieter roads. As a road training ride, it's easily a sub 2 hour blast but if you're travelling with electric assistance, you'll have time to stop off and enjoy the facilities, landmarks & views.
Once you've made the climb out of Penrith through Newton Reigny & Laithes, you'll reach Greystoke with option to visit the village swimming pool, Boot & Shoe pub. From there, you can then enjoy a relaxing low level cycle back to town.
A little more challenging than the above circular and with an added 10k, will be a slightly longer adventure whichever mode of cycle you choose to travel.
From Penrith you will head up the A6 at the North end of town til you reach Bowmans Carpets. From there, it's a left turn down to Thacka Beck and through to Newton Rigg (this section is ideal for gravel bikes and hybrids.) Once through there, it's a right turn to Newton Reigny. Circling Greystoke Forest, you'll pass through Laithes, Lamonby and down to Hutton Roof. You'll enjoy a lovely descent from Berrier, through Greystoke village and back to Newton Reigny sticking to the main road this time it will lead you to Castletown, back into Penrith.
A favourite of our team, this road ride takes you down to the stunning Haweswater Reservoir on quiet country roads which wind along some beautiful hamlets and through wonderful rugged landscape.
At Brougham Castle you can reach Bampton either via Clifton Dykes or take a right to Yanwath as both options on this circular are similar in terms of elevation. Bampton is home to a lovely village store & The Mardale Inn and a little further on you will find Naddle Farm, an RSPB Nature Reserve with Badger watching, Squirrel spotting and plenty of birds to both see & hear. Further on is recently renovated stunning Haweswater Hotel.
An undulating 35km ride taking you from Penrith straight up Wordsworth St and right on to Beacon Edge, left at the lovely Roundthorn Hotel following the road round to Langwathby. *Be careful here as there are a few sharp bends on the descent*. From here, we recommend heading to Langwathby Village Green to say 'Hi' to Nick at Saddlebacks Coffee for the finest brew & cake in the land! There's a lot going on in the village with a pub, village store and play area.
From Langwathby head to Little Salkeld where we've added the option of a detour to Long Meg & her Daughters - an ancient stone circle and very worthwhile experiencing. Back on the road and it's a left to Glassonby past the church and along the picturesque River Eden to Kirkoswald. Once over the bridge you will head to Lazonby, following Salkeld Road back into Penrith.
The Lowther Church Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. This route takes you into the North Park, where you will come across Low Gardens Bridge. You will then take the riverside path along towards Askham Bridge and into the woods. Follow the path to the next signpost and turn left, returning you to Lowther Castle.
The Lowther Church Loop is relatively easy going, a couple of hills to negotiate, but nothing challenging. Majority of terrain is private concrete roads or gravel tracks meaning it is perfect for families.
The Askham Fell Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. It takes you through the Lower North Park, and up on to Askham Fell via Askham Village. Venture across the fell top with fantastic views of Lake Ullswater and drop back down via Whale returning to the Castle.
Moderate to Challenging mainly due to the climbing involved. The top of the Askham Fell Loop is relatively easy going with some slightly rockier areas to be aware of.
The Lowther River Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. This route takes you into the North Park, where you will come across Low Gardens Bridge. You will then take the riverside path along towards Askham Bridge. Cross the bridge and up the hill in to Askham Village. Turn Left at the cross roads and follow the road, keeping left at the next fork in the road, signed to Whale. Cross the road bridge and take a left off the road. follow the gravel track back up the the hill returning to Lowther Castle.
This trail uses a lot of the Lowther Church Loop for the first half, which is very family friendly. If you are confident with children riding on roads, this trail is family friendly too.
